Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar was sworn in as the 44th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday.
President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office and secrecy to Justice Khehar at the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Khehar (64) will be the first Chief Justice from the Sikh community, and will hold office for over seven months till August 27.
He presided over the Chief Justice’s court to hear cases following the ceremony.
Justice Khehar had presided over the five-judge constitution bench in the Supreme Court that had invalidated the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act for appointment of judges.
Besides, he also headed the bench which had set aside the imposition of the President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh.
