Actor Om Puri passes away

Critically acclaimed actor Om Puri died on Friday following a massive heart attack. He was 66.

He is survived by his estranged wife Nandita and son Ishaan.

He returned to his house at Andheri on Thursday evening after a shoot. His doorbell went unanswered on Friday morning, following which his driver raised an alarm. Om Puri was found dead on the kitchen floor.

A postmortem was conducted at Cooper Hospital, after which the body was driven back to his house. The last rites were performed at the Oshiwara crematorium.
Nandita was sobbing, and broke down at the hospital. Several top Bollywood actors offered their condolences on social media.

Some visited his house and the crematorium. Among those who paid their tributes were Shashi Kapoor, Raza Murad, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Vidya Balan, Prakash Jha, Neena Gupta, and Sudhir Mishra.

Fans thronged the house and crematorium for a last glimpse of the versatile actor.
 
A recipient of two national awards and two Filmfare awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, Om Puri had an illustrious career spanning over four decades.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the death and recalled Om Puri’s long career in theatre and films.

Maharashtra Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao said, “He was one of the most brilliant artistes produced by the Indian film industry. He had the rare ability to infuse life in the characters portrayed by him. With a deep baritone, he played roles remembered even after the passage of several years. Om Puriji was a socially committed person.”
