Two molestation cases registered in city every day

Last Updated 07 January 2017, 20:15 IST

On average, police register two cases of molestation every day in the city. Most of these cases are detected too.

New Year for the city started on an ugly note with nine molestation cases being registered in the first week itself.

A top police officer said: “Victims are narrating their agony on social media platforms. Media is picking up this and reporting it. Based on this, suo motu cases are being registered.”

“It is good that cases are coming to light as the police can track down miscreants.” The officer said this will act as a detteremt.

“Molestation or rape take place mostly after constant stalking. Once the victim is aware that she is being stalked either physically or on phone and social media, she must report it to the police immediately. We can nab the suspects immediately,” added the officer. But victims tend to ignore such advances, which could lead to dangerous consequences, he said.

Another senior police officer said a number of cases go unreported.

“There are several instances where victims do not approach the police. Such cases don’t come to light. There is a strict order to police stations, that a suo motu case can be registered when they get a minor evidence,’’ the officer said, pointing out that there are plans to start various initiatives to create awareness not only among women but also in men.
