Last Updated 09 January 2017, 18:55 IST

Women Congress workers staged a demonstration against demonetisation by carrying a spoon and plate in Mangaluru on Monday.

Addressing the protesters, district Women Congress president Shalet Pinto said women are the maximum sufferers and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is still ignorant about it. The move of the Union government to scrap high denomination currency notes has snatched the money of common people. All the sections of society have been affected by it, she claimed.

Through this protest, efforts are being made to wake up the BJP government at the Centre from deep slumber about the problems being faced by women and common man due to demonetisation. The move has benefited only a few rich people. It has not helped in curbing black money, she said.

She said even after 50 days, the situation has not been improved. After realising the mistake, the government is now propagating cashless transaction. The labour class has been affected without daily wages, she charged.

The district Women Congress workers staged a protest against demonetisation in Udupi by displaying utensils and vegetables and demanded a white paper on the purpose of demonetisation.

District Women Congress president Veronica Cornelio said the Modi-led Union government should immediately release a white paper on the reason of the demonetisation. Even after 50 days, the problems have not been solved, she charged.

She challenged the prime minister to declare the amount of black money collected after demonetisation was announced.

She questioned why compensation is not being provided to the families of the people who died following demonetisation. The prime minister has taken a disastrous decision without consulting any economist or RBI. It will a have detrimental effect on Indian economy, she predicted.

Congress leader Jyothi Hebbar said demonetisation has led to confusions and it has only helped the corporate sector.

Quoting the examples of former USSR and North Korea, Hebbar said the country is also on the threshold of a similar disaster.
