Ranji win adds zing to kite flying

On a day when the whole of Gujarat indulged in kite flying, the state had another reason to cheer.

Gujarat on Saturday bagged its maiden Ranji Trophy at the Holkar stadium of Indore. The state team scripted history when Chirag Gandhi flashed his bat for a boundary through the vacant space in the slip cordon, off fast bowler Shardul Thakur.

“Two boys in our family are training for professional cricket, but when it comes to kite flying, cricket takes a backseat. However, today was different. Gujarat was making history, so we were hooked to updates by RJs, along with kite flying,” said Sejal Desai, a homemaker.

“Over six decades ago, the Gujarat cricket team lost the Ranji Trophy finals to men from the region of Holkar, and today Gujarat won its first Ranji at the Holkar stadium in Indore,” Sejal (42) said, sharing a few messages she had received over social media.

People were seen on the on terraces, congratulating each other over the victory.

The roads generally have a thin crowd on Uttarayan day as most of the people are on the rooftops. “This time it appeared even more deserted. We also went to our relative’s place for kite flying, but ended watching the class of Parthiv Patel on television,” Dhaval Amin, a 30-year-old finance professional, said.
