'Make attempts to promote Kannada in villages'

Addressing the valedictory ceremony at the 6th Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Sammelana here at Ambalpadi, he said Sammalenas should be organised at grassroot-level to promote the language. Kannada Sahitya Parishat belongs to all Kannadigas. Attempts should be made to promote Kannada in the villages. “I see no dire threat to the existence of the language. However, measures should be taken to safeguard the interests of the Kannadigas. More than thousand precious terminologies of the language are losing their subsistence. The Parishat has taken up ‘Nigantu Yojane’ at a cost of Rs one crore. A sum of Rs 50 lakh has been already released to re-publish as many as 8 dictionaries,” he added.

Teams to be formed

As many as 40 member teams are being formed at all regional levels to involve them in the process of finding the rare terminologies of the language that are on the verge of extinction. They collect the rare words and send it to the sub editors in the Parishat for corrections.  Later, the final touch up is given by the Chief Editor for compilation.

Parishat has taken up measures to support research, publications and other useful ways to promote the language. Books worth as many as Rs 6 crore were sold out in the recently concluded Akhila Bharatha Kannada Sahitya Sammelana at Gadag, he added.

Earlier, delivering the valedictory address renowned scholar Bannanje Govindacharya lamented that Kannada language is losing its relevance in its own land. All other languages ought to be accommodated in order to augment the richness of Kannada language.

Even though Sanskrit was the forerunner, its influence has resulted in the loss of some valuable vocabularies of Kannada language. Kannada language will suffer a huge setback in most of the areas in Bangalore during the coming years, he opined.

Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Ambatanaya Mudradi Sammelana President Dr U P Upadhayaya and others were present on the occasion.
