A police inspector opened fire on two suspected robbers when they attempted to stab him. But the duo managed to ride off. The incident occurred in Puttenahalli, JP Nagar, south Bengaluru, on Monday night.

JP Nagar police inspector Dharmendra was on his night rounds near Puttenahalli lake when he saw the youths riding a motorcycle without a registration number. They weren’t wearing helmets either. He flagged them down. As the rider slowed down, the man on the pillion brandished a dagger and tried to stab the inspector.

“Dharmendra survived the attack and fired in the air in self-defence. He yelled at the rider to pull in, but the man paid no heed and rode off. Dharmendra fired again but the men were gone,” DCP (South) Sharanappa S D told DH. Police suspect that one of the men had been injured. “We have asked local hospitals to inform us if anybody seeks treatment for gunshot injuries. We checked the spot but there were no bloodstains,” the DCP added.

Police suspect that the men had committed robberies and chain-snatchings in the locality, and are checking surveillance cameras to trace the duo.
