The “jail bharo” agitation got good response in Nagpur, Chandrapur, Yavatmal and Bhandara districts and mixed response in the other districts of the region. In Nagpur, Congress and BJP activists held demonstrations at separate places to demand a separate Vidarbha state.
The call for the agitation was given by the Vidarbha Rajya Sangram Samiti, the umbrella body of pro-Vidarbha organisations.
In Mumbai, where the budget session of the state legislature is in progress, the BJP members raised the demand in both Houses arguing that it was the only way out to overcome years of neglect and backwardness.
The party sought to move adjournment motions demanding discussion on the issue in the Assembly as well as in the Legislative Council, but was disallowed to do so by the presiding officers.
