HC directs more power supply to rural areas

A division bench comprising Justices V Gopala Gowda and B S Patil disposed of a petition by G R Mohan, a city-based advocate with a direction to provide additional power till monsoon to bail out farmers in distress.

“We are conscious of the fact that this court has to bear in mind the difficulties that State is facing in this field. But we would like to state that in the matter of crisis where the livelihood of the citizens is at stake, the High Court has to step in.”

The bench said that the State is in a position to make available power for both rural and urban areas. The Court is sure that the government will be in a position to properly streamline all the available options to secure the required quantity of electricity, it said.

The bench directed the State to help the students preparing for examinations by providing adequate power. The government should ensure regular power supply in urban and rural areas of the State so as to help the students who are either preparing for the exam or taking exam to pursue their studies without any hindrance from power cut. The Bench also said supply of drinking water should not hindered due to indiscriminate loadshedding.
