Kittur CRPF jawan killed in J&K

Basappa Hanumantappa Bhajantri, a Central Reserve Police Force jawan and resident of Bailur village near Kittur, was killed after militants opened fire on CRPF jawans deployed for byelection duty in Jammu and Kashmir.

The 55-year-old Bhajantri was killed on the spot. Five other CRPF jawans and two civilians were injured in a militant attack at Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar. Bhajantri had been serving as an assistant sub-inspector in the 97th Battalion of CRPF. He is survived by his parents, wife, son and two daughters, according to family sources. A pal of gloom descended over Bailur village. The jawan’s mortal remains are likely to reach the village via Goa late Tuesday evening, according to official sources.

The body would be kept for public viewing at the premises of the government school in the village and laid to rest with state honours on Wednesday, said official sources.
