Nifty falls 64 points, ends below 9,200-mark

The NSE 50-share Nifty suffered more losses today as it slumped to a one-week low after US military assault on a Syrian airbase in a retaliatory move kept global markets on tenterhooks.

Asian indices ended mixed while Europe traded lower. The US sharpened its attack against Syria with a barrage of cruise missiles on its airbase, ratcheting up geo-political concerns.

The NSE 50-share Nifty opened lower at 9,223.70 and moved in a range of 9,250.50 and 9,188.10 before closing at 9,198.30, registering a loss of 63.65 points, or 0.69 per cent.

The Nifty pharma dropped by 1.76 per cent, followed by PSU bank 1.52 per cent, realty 1.47 per cent, metal 1.11 per cent and media 1.25 per cent. Broader small-cap and mid-cap turned weaker.

A total of 1,048 shares ended with losses while 652 finished with gains while 71 ruled steady.

The major Nifty loser is Bank of Baroda 3.57 per cent. Sun Pharma, Adani Ports, Lupin and Kotak Bank too lost.

However, BPCL gained by 4.51 per cent and IOC 3.01 per cent.Turnover in the cash segment climbed to Rs 28,156.27 crore from Rs 25,422.94 crore yesterday.

A total of 14,456.88 lakh shares changed hands in 9,613,876 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms stood at Rs 12,102,539 crore.
