In a shocking incident, a police officer in Tamil Nadu brutely attacked a woman during the anti-liquor agitation in Tirupur district, triggering an outcry across the State even as National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued notice to the government over cop excess against protesters.

Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police (ADSP) Pandiarajan, attached to Tirupur police station, forcefully slapped a 35-year old Easwari in a public view when she protested along with others against the opening of a liquor shop in Samalapuram area.

Pandiarajan not only beaten the woman but also ordered lathi charge against the protesters in which more than 20 persons sustained injuries with couple of them received severe head injuries.

The incident, which was picked up in the CCTV cameras, went viral on the various social media, resulting in a public outcry, with various women organisations and political parties including the Opposition DMK, BJP and Congress condemned the police behaviour and demanded stringent action against him.

Even Madras High Court, which took up the matter, directed that the injured in police action should be given treatment in the hospitals of their choice at the expense of the Government.

In addition, the NHRC also issued notices to the Chief Secretary and State DGP calling for reports within two weeks on the reported incident of police excess while dispersing about 300 people, who were protesting against the opening of a liquor shop in the residential area.

Observing that the police had taken law into their hands by exceeding their power in resorting to indiscriminate beating of the protestors and in fact a senior officer himself had gone to the extent of beating women who were standing helpless and defenseless, the Commission said the act of the police is nothing but serious violation of human rights and that too rights guaranteed to women for their self-respect.
