Australian cricketer and player of Kings XI Punjab, Shaun Edward Marsh says that he always wanted to be a cricketer. Quite obviously, considering that his father Geoff Marsh is a cricketing legend and his younger brother Mitchel too has followed his father’s footsteps.

Shaun says that he uses his spare time during the IPL to try out everything Indian, be it savouring the food, exploring the culture or understand the way of life of people here. In an interview with Nina C George, Shaun talks about what keeps him going.

How does it feel to be back for another season of the IPL?
It’s a great feeling. We are thoroughly enjoying each other’s company. The team started on a good note and we hope to keep that tempo alive.

What do you think has changed in the last 10 years of the IPL?
The game has grown immensely and cricketers have got to know each other more closely.

Have you also grown as a player in the IPL format?
There are some very fine players in the IPL and one, undoubtedly, learns a great deal and grows in the process as well.

You were the highest scorer in the first season of the IPL. Do you intend to repeat the same this year?
The team is playing really well and that’s all that matters to me. It’s teamwork before everything else.

Did you get a chance to explore the cities that you played in?
We have a very tight schedule this season. But I enjoy being in the larger cities of India and I am always fascinated with Indian culture.

Any preferences in food?
I enjoy Indian food, especially ‘dal’ and rice. I like it when the food is not too spicy. I make it a point to try every Indian dish just to make sure I don’t miss out on anything.

How do you handle pressure?
By trusting in the preparation and in the game itself.

Do you also learn a lot from the senior players?
There are some brilliant players and mentors this season. There’s a lot to learn from them just by conversing with them.

Your advice to young players...
The young players have a lot of potential. If you are passionate about the sport, then nothing can stop you from reaching the top. Just work out well, enjoy the game and listen to advice from senior players.
