A police constable travelling to Hyderabad to trace a missing teenage girl died while a probationary sub-inspector was injured when their car toppled in a road accident in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh early on Tuesday.

A close relative of the girl, who was driving the car, also perished in the accident. Suresh (26), a constable attached to the HAL police station, and probationary sub-inspector Srinivas were travelling in a Toyota Innova to trace a 19-year-old girl whose disappearance had been reported to the HAL police station two months ago.

Jayanna (30), a relative of the girl, was at the wheel. The group had left for Hyderabad after police received information on Monday night about the girl’s whereabouts.

Jayanna lost control of the car near Dhone Junction railway station. The automobile crashed into a road divider, spun off the road and toppled on the other side of the road before screeching to a halt. Both Jayanna and Suresh, who was sitting next to him, died on the spot. The front of the vehicle was fully smashed and police had to extricate the bodies.

Srinivas sustained injuries on the neck and was taken to a hospital in Kurnool where he is said to be out of danger, according to the Bengaluru police. Suresh, a native of Telesanga village in Athani taluk of Belagavi district, had joined the police in 2011.

His body has been sent to his hometown where his last rites will be held on Thursday, police said. Jayanna’s mortal remains were brought to Bengaluru and handed over to his family.
