You have to go out, you go through your entire wardrobe and after emptying almost all of its contents, you come to the conclusion that you have nothing to wear. This frustrating situation is the story of almost every girl. It really is a Herculean task to look great and at the same time, not burn a hole in your pocket. The solution to this problem is street shopping.

Places like Commercial Street, Brigade Road, Chickpet, Avenue Road, Malleswaram, Jayanagar and Dubai Plaza are a few destinations in the city where you can find affordable, fashionable clothing and accessories.

As the temperatures are continuously rising, it is very important to dress accordingly. This summer, maxis, poncho tops, flare dresses, palazzos, shift dresses, crop tops and linen or cotton ‘kurtis’ are the go-to attires. “It is very important to understand which clothing pieces work for you. For example, palazzos don’t suit everyone.

It is necessary to understand your body type and dress accordingly. But most importantly, you must have your own stamp of individuality”, says fashion designer Sanjay Choraria. Speaking about what type of clothes suit each body type, he says, “Palazzos look great on tall people and can be paired with a printed crop top and nice earrings. Maxis also look great. For people who are short, shift or flare dresses with bell sleeves are complimenting.

” This season, you can sport scarves and hats too! One scarf can serve many purposes such as a protective head gear, a poncho top or even a wrap- around skirt. You can pull off the bohemian look by adding some junk jewellery. What’s important is to play around with the clothes you have and start your own fashion trend.

Street shopping  is the saviour of college-going girls, especially those who hate repeating their clothes. Three degree students put together different looks all within the budget of Rs 1,000 through their street shopping escapades. Rachel Jacob, a 19-year-old, says,“I love wearing midi-skirts with slits as they accentuate your figure. Pairing it with a nice sheer top and some accessories makes the look very classy.”

Shruthi Sriram says, “I love sporting Indo-Western attires. Long ‘kurtis’ with palazzos give an illusion of being taller and it suits me perfectly.” Lastly, Sanaya Jacob says, “My favourite is the bohemian look. Poncho tops or cold shoulder tops with some junk jewellery are perfect for the summer.”

If you are still not convinced to hit the streets, the sheer pleasure that one gets from winning a bout of bargaining with a shopkeeper should be the calling card. Joan Cherian, a 19-year-old frequent shopper, says, “Shopping on streets is a sort of community feeling, as opposed to shopping at malls or retail stores because of the number of people.

The experience itself is more personal as you get to banter and converse with the shopkeepers, whereas in malls, it becomes more mechanical.” So grab your shopping partner and head out without further ado.
