Last Updated 28 March 2010, 18:29 IST

Commotion prevailed for a while near the Government Pharmacy College polling booth around noon, but the timely arrival of a KSRP van parked nearby prevented the incident from turning ugly, police said.

Sudhama Nagar is considered one of the sensitive wards as many candidates with proven criminal record were in the fray.

According to sources, supporters of V K Praveen, president, Mother Theresa Nagareeka Kshemabhivruddhi Sangha, whose proxy candidate E Srinivasan is contesting as an independent, clashed with the group of another independent candidate Vedi after the latter arrived at the booth.

Police, however, resorted to caning to disperse the crowd and brought the situation under control.
