It’s a race against time. But Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is hopeful of setting up ward committees within one month, the deadline, set up by Karnataka High Court.

Mayor G Padmavathi told DH that most of the councillors have already prepared  a list of ward committee members and by May 10, the list in respect of 198 wards would be ready.

“The list will be submitted to the high court in the second week of May. We plan issue a notification and make committees functional as soon as we receive the list,’’ she said.

Kuvempunagar corporator V V Parthibarajan said that he had submitted the list of ward committee members six months ago and every month, the members had been holding meeting to discuss an array of civic issues. Dasarahalli Corporator K Narasimha Nayak said he had already prepared a list which would be handed over to mayor shortly.

According to rules, a ward committee should have three women, three members from general category, two from SC/ST and two representatives of residents’ welfare associations, with ward corporator as committee chairperson.

Corporators said that they were selecting the members on the basis of the interest evinced by citizens in civic issues. Mattikere corporator Jayaprakash M C said,  “During ward functions and grievance meetings, we get to a know a few citizen volunteers who are interested in bringing in a change and RWAs also sometimes suggest names. So selecting members is not a big deal.”
