According to reports reaching here, 18-year-old Sukhram was having an affair with a girl of the same village for about a year and both were planning to marry in the near future. The families of the lovers, however, had no inkling of their affair.
On Saturday night, the girl left her home to meet Sukhram in the opposite house, reports said. The uncle of the girl, however, saw him going to Sukhram’s house.
He raised an alarm and called other members of the family, who caught hold of the lovers and dragged them out of the house towards the nearby fields and killed them with lathis and sticks even as the parents of Sukhram kept begging for his life, reports said. The villagers meanwhile remained mute spectators.
Police have arrested the father and two brothers of the girl while the other accused were absconding. In the Jat-dominated western Uttar Pradesh “honour killings” for marrying against the wishes of the family are quite common and many lovers in the past had been killed for family honour.
