Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has stressed the need for strengthening the government’s involvement in community health programmes and healthcare access for all.

He was speaking at the Bangalore Health Festival that kicked off on Thursday.  A dance skit showcasing the importance of hand-washing and the ill-effects of smoking was among events that marked the first day of the festival. The festival saw the participation of celebrated doctors and public health activists who deliberated on various issues including an effective community health programme and the need for accessible health services for all.

Over 100 stalls set up by hospitals and government organisations gave visitors a glimpse of their services. The event included free health screening, panel discussions on various health issues, counselling sessions and insightful talks.

Shalini Rajneesh, principal secretary (health and family welfare), highlighted the need for a strong model for community health. The event also promoted organ donation. “We wish to strike a powerful conversation between the health industry and the general public to change their perceptions about the world of medicine. This event will serve as a one-stop shop for all health and medical needs,” said Deepak Thimaya, event organiser.

The festival showcased innovations in health technology, which includes the demonstration of non-mydriatic fundus camera that helps ophthalmologists view the retina in detail and document results for a comparative analysis. It does not require pupil dilation and is painless in nature.

“India has one of the highest number of people with diabetes. Diabetes also has a serious impact on one’s vision. A camera like this will help in early detection of the onset of diabetes,” said Dr Sujatha Rathore, professor of ophthalmology, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital.

Health Minister K R Ramesh Kumar, Agriculture Minister Krishna Byregowda and Bengaluru Development Minister K J George were present.
