The West division police have formed two teams to crack the murder of a woman whose decomposed body was found inside a plastered wardrobe of a house in Gandhinagar in Kengeri on Sunday.

The body was subjected to postmortem on Monday at the Rajarajeshwari Hospital on Mysuru Road with forensic experts overseeing the procedure. The body is yet to be formally identified though the police suspect the victim is Shanthakumari, grandmother of engineering student Sanjay, who was living with his mother Shashikala and grandmother in the house until the start of February this year, the police said.

According to the police, Sanjay had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from his house owner Anil claiming that one of his relatives had fallen ill and he needed cash to pay the hospital. A police team which tracked Sanjay’s father to Shivamogga learned that he had divorced Shashikala many years ago and Sanjay, his mother Shashikala and grandmother Shanthakumari had come to Bengaluru in 1998. They initially stayed at Halasuru in a small room after which they moved into a house in Indiranagar and then to Gandhinagar in Kengeri where Sanjay had paid Rs 40,000 as advance to Anil, the police added.

Investigating officers also visited the private engineering college where he claimed to have studied and learnt that he had neither been attending college nor had appeared for exams since December last, according to his professors and classmates, the police said.

Sanjay had also told the house owner that he worked part-time for a real estate office in Indiranagar. Police, who visited the real estate office, found out that Sanjay had lied to Anil. Meanwhile, the Kengeri police have also appealed to the public to approach them with any information about Sanjay, Shashikala and Shanthakumari. The public can call the police inspector on 9480801724 or Kengeri police station on 080-22942510.
