O Panneerselvam, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, on Friday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, amid indications that his group may back the NDA’s presidential candidate.

Panneerselvam-led AIADMK Puratchi Thalaivi Amma has the support of 10 MPs and 9 MLAs, whereas Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami-led AIADMK (Amma) has got 26 Lok Sabha MPs and 124 MLAs.

Panneerselvam said he discussed the drought situation in Tamil Nadu with Modi, and sought immediate assistance from the Centre. He also sought a probe into the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

He said a decision to support the NDA in the presidential poll will be taken only after the announcement of candidates.

The former chief minister was accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan and former minister K Palanisamy.
Significantly, Panneerselvam’s meeting with the prime minister was preceded by Lok Sabha deputy speaker M Thambidurai, who belongs to the AIADMK (Amma) faction, calling on Modi.

The Panneerselvam camp on Friday urged the Election Commission to restrain the Sasikala faction from using the AIADMK office.

The counsel for the Panneerselvam camp submitted fresh documents to the EC against the elevation of Sasikala as the interim general secretary of the party.
