Vikas explains his stance to boxing panel

Boxer Vikas Krishan on Saturday appeared in front of the disciplinary committee to explain his reasons for forfeiting the semifinal bout in the Asian Championships.

In its first hearing, the committee, headed by Asit Banerjee and including Rajesh Bhandari and Nirwan Mukherjee, attempted to go into the depth of the issue. Vikas, 24, was the top seed in Asian Championships at Tashkent earlier this month, but gave a walkover to Korea's Lee Dongyun in the semifinals.

“We wanted to know his reasons and emotions for taking such a step. We wanted him to explain why India had to lose the opportunity to win a gold or silver. It was a good meeting, it went long. We told him he shouldn't worry- that his career is over or some other thing like that-, that he is a talented boxer, but he needs to clarify his action. He assured us to fully cooperate and appear again in person if need be,” Banerjee told Deccan Herald.

“We will now also be speaking to the coaches from NIS Patiala related. We have requested the federation if they could be made available here tomorrow.”
