Rain hits traffic, power supply in many areas

Several trees were uprooted while low-lying areas were inundated as heavy rain pounded the city on Monday night. There was a huge pile-up of vehicles on major roads. However, there were no reports of loss of lives and destruction of properties.

Traffic police, BBMP and Bescom staff got into action and struggled hard to ensure order on roads and normalcy in many areas. A tree came crashing down near Vidyasagar School in Vijayanagar, while  traffic was halted for over an hour as a tree was uprooted near Modi Hospital in Rajajinagar.

 Trees were also uprooted in Sadashivanagar and Yelahanka.There were reports of wall collapse from Hosaguddadahalli, Chamarajpet, City Market, Amarjyothinagar and Sunkadakatte. Rainwater gushed into a few houses at Sultanpalya, Tannery Road, Srirampuram, Malleswaram, Shanthinagar and Hombegowda Nagar. Vehicular movement was affected at Richmond Circle as roads in the vicinity were  submerged in rainwater. Vehicle users struggled to navigate the roads which were under two feet of water.

The underpass near Golf Course Road was submerged, while many parts of Hongasandra and HSR Layout were inundated. Rainwater overflowed on roads in Rajajinagar, Basavanagudi, Ragi Gudda, Hebbal, RT Nagar, Old Madras Road, Hosur Road, Outer Ring Road, Bannerghatta Road and Ballari Road. The situation was no better in and around Majestic area and City Market.

 Traffic snarls were reported due to inundation of arterial roads. Vehicles were stuck between Tin Factory junction and the down ramp to Old Madras Road for nearly an hour.

The rain resulted in an excruciating traffic pile-up on Platform Road, Pottery Road, Magadi Road, Mysuru Road, Peenya and Yeshwantpur. The traffic police deployed additional men at Gali Anjaneya temple to ensure order on the road.

Most parts of Bengaluru Urban received rain between 65 mm and 110 mm. Doddabanahalli and Avalahalli received 54 mm of rain; Singasandra and Bommanahalli 64 mm; Manorayanapalya 94 mm; Rajajinagar 86;Rajmahal Guttahalli 110 mm; Somanahalli 72 mm;  Kottigepalya 66 mm; Dasarahalli 15.5 mm; Marappanapalya 12 mm; Kengeri 15.5 mm and Jnanabharathi recorded 18 mm of rain.

 Many areas in southern and western Bengaluru plunged into darkness due to thundershowers. Power cuts were also reported from Magadi Road, Rajajinagar, Dasarahalli, Nagarbhavi, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Bannerghatta, Chandra Layout, Basaveshwaranagar, Sultanpalya, KG Nagar, DJ Halli, Basavanagudi and Kengeri. The Bescom control room was flooded with calls by residents.
