We came here as tourists a couple of years back. Little did we know then that we would fall in love with this place and would choose to settle down here someday,” says Pranami Sarmah, who moved to Bengaluru two-and-a-half-years back with her husband Alok.

The numerous job opportunities available here led them to choose the city as their base. Hailing from Guwahati, Assam, the couple is blessed with a 16-month-old baby girl named Drishana.

“We were in Delhi for 10 years and then in Gurugram for a couple of years before we moved here. Bengaluru has been lucky for us as we had our child here. Life is laidback here and the city is a lot calmer, especially compared to a place like Delhi. The people here are very friendly and lead a simpler life,” says Pranami.

She loves her job and also enjoys the company of a few friends in the city who, she feels, are for life. The couple mostly hangs out at malls as they are a one-stop destination for everything and little Drishana also enjoys the outings. “We also make sure that we spend time with our friends. Be it house parties,  potluck or occasions like housewarming ceremonies, we just need an excuse to get together. Since most of them have kids, these get-togethers are fun for both the parents and the children,” she says.

Being adventurous as well as big foodies, the couple likes to drive around the city and explore the place. Pranami highlights that it is both amazing and surprising that the city has conserved some of the old houses and greenery. Ask them about the culture in the city and Alok says, “Bengaluru has a great cultural orientation. It is nice to see that Bengalureans are so proud of their culture and well-connected to their roots. Having a commemorative day to celebrate the state is also very exciting.”

Drawing a parallel between Bengaluru and her hometown, Pranami says, “More than the differences, I like to see the similarities. This place is so similar to my hometown in terms of the food habits — with rice being a staple dish — and also the nature of the people who are always willing to help. The difference comes only in terms of the job opportunities. Here, they are in abundance with some kind of job for everyone.”

“There are many other things that we like about Bengaluru. There is plenty of variety when it comes to food and I see one new restaurant opening every other day. That apart, I find the city to be very safe. Considering that we are from another part of the country, we have never faced any unwanted situation. People here don’t like to disturb the peace of another individual or interfere in their personal life. It’s a pleasant place to live in,” adds Alok.
