Think ‘change’ and the first thing that comes to mind is getting your hair coloured, isn’t it? From rainbow hair to bolder versions of balayage and metallic shades, hair colouring gives you a plethora of options to choose from.

However, this year seems to be the year of warm and natural colours with blorange, natural roots and subtle highlights doing the rounds.

Last year, Denmark was rated the happiest country in the world. The reason behind this was discovered to be their unique lifestyle concept, the world can’t stop talking about — ‘hygge’ (pronounced HUE-guh) which literally translates to ‘feeling cosy’. It is closely associated with warm blankets, mellow ambience and a good coffee, all much needed for the harsh climate Denmark faces.

This concept by the author of ‘The Little Book of Hygge’, Meik Wiking made its way into the hair world in no time. Celebrities like Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor have flaunted this technique with panache, in many of their appearances this year.

And the youngsters of our city also don’t seem to be bored of taking bright risks. Manthan Bahal, a student of School of Communication, Manipal University, who is interning in Bengaluru during the Summer, says, “I coloured my hair purple, because I love that colour! And I also wanted to make a statement that coloured hair isn’t only for women. When life gets
tough, do weird stuff to your hair!”

For those who want to or rather need to play it completely safe while being a little adventurous, dark brown or chocolate highlights will do.

An enthusiastic Dhruv Sivasankar of Christ University says, “Because black just isn’t enough anymore. Oh, and I also love smashing stereotypes! My go-to jam was blue, but now I’m totally waiting to get some pink highlights in there! Currently, I have a darker brown.”

When asked about the most commonly requested colour, Nagesh, owner and hairstylist at Aquamarine Beauty Spa in Rajajinagar, says, “Blue and green are youngsters’ favourites at the moment. But, I feel on our skintones that lean more towards the dusky side, magenta and red will really work wonders. Blonde and gold shades are also in right now and those can look absolutely stunning if done well.”

18-year-old Ankita Patil, who just finished her schooling from National Public School, Indiranagar, says, “I had been wanting to colour my hair for a long time so I decided to do so after my 12th standard exams. I have really straight hair which, I thought, would look nice when coloured. I did not want blonde or brown and I didn’t want to bleach my hair either, so red was the perfect option.” She chose to dip-dye her long,  jet black hair with a mild mix of pink in red.

Seems like these sunset shades are here to stay for a while, but the techno colours definitely won’t be leaving the neighbourhood anytime soon!
