The president of the Rotary Club of Bangalore V S Ranga Rao said the purpose behind founding these awards is to encourage people who made a difference in the society and present these extraordinary citizens as icons for others to emulate.

Rao said the Rotary Club, established 82 years ago, has done many charitable works such as upgrading government schools, running Rotary TTK Blood Bank, dialysis centre at Rajarajeshwari Hospital on Mysuru Road as well as Manohar Atthavar Hospital offering free treatment.

“We have a history of 82 years of community services. We have improved 83 schools under our ‘Happy School’ programme and 17 more will be upgraded shortly,” said Rao.
