Senior Congress MLC V S Ugrappa on Friday took exception to Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy issuing notice to eight MLCs in connection with the charges that they claimed about Rs 17 lakh as travel allowance by submitting fake bills.

Urgappa told reporters that Shankaramurthy has exceeded his limits and was just hitting back at the Congress members for submitting a petition seeking permission to table a no-confidence motion against him.

Shankaramurthy had served notices to Allum Veerabhadrappa, Raghu Achar, N S Boseraju, S Ravi, R B Thimmapura (all Congress), C R Manohar and Appaji Gouda (both JD-S) and M D Lakshminarayana (Independent) following a complaint by BJP leader in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council Padmanabha Reddy.

Urgappa said the Chairman can act against members for violating whip issued by the parties inside the House. “The complaint submitted is not maintainable. At the most the chairman can refer the matter to the ethics committee of the House, ” he added.
