Bengaluru girl wins The Diana Legacy Award

Last Updated 07 June 2017, 20:52 IST

A 14-year-old student from the city, Nikhiya Shamsher, received ‘The Diana Legacy Award’ from Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, Prince of Wales, at an event held at St James Palace in London.

The award is given by the charity ‘The Diana Award’, supported by William and Harry, as a celebration of their mother, Princess Diana’s legacy, who believed that youngsters had the power to transform people’s lives.
Nikhiya, a student of Greenwood High, was among the 20 youngsters from across the globe who received the award in May.

Nikhiya runs a registered NGO which works to provide quality education to underprivileged children. When she was 12, Nikhiya launched a ‘Bags, Books and Blessings’ campaign through which she raised money to provide school supplies for children who could not afford these. In June 2015, Nikhiya also launched an initiative called ‘Yearn to Learn’ through which she helped  set up laboratories in schools which did not have the facility.
