Sandeep, Akshata emerge champs

Local runner Sandeep N and A Akshata of Davanagere DSC Club emerged winners in the men’s and women’s races respectively in the K A Nettakallappa Memorial State-level Road Races conducted by the Deccan Athletic Club and sponsored by Deccan Herald and Prajavani here at the KH Patil District Stadium on Sunday.

In the men’s 12km race, Sandeep ran with confidence from the beginning and broke away from his opponents after four kilometres.

He maintained the lead till the end of the race to claim the top honours in 40 minutes and 39 seconds.
Sandeep Navalekar finished second (40:42) while Raj of KSP settled for the third place at 42:18.

Akshata wins

A final year degree student in Davanagere, Akshata won the 6km-women’s race in 24m, 01 seconds for her third win in these events since last year.

Bengaluru’s Kamalakshi K V (26:05) came a distant second, finishing just ahead of the third-placed Jayanti M (26:23) of Gadag.  

In the boys’ section (under-16) Bannappa M Wodeyar of Belagavi claimed the 2.5km race in 7 minutes 42 seconds. Sonia Jadhav of Gadag won the corresponding event for girls in 10 minutes and 43 seconds.
