'Experimentation is the key to success'

Though not a trained designer, she nevertheless weaves magic with her outfits. Rebecca Dewan’s love for designing made her venture into high profile couture and now she effortlessly fuses fabrics with unconventional embroideries, resulting in a style never seen before.

She chats with Anila Kurian about her creative process and her upcoming collection.

Your upcoming collection has a Victorian influence to it. Where did you get the inspiration from?

I travel a lot and this one happened when I was in Europe. The wonderful place, a rich varied heritage and the Victorian properties influenced my designs.

Tell us about the colours used in the collection...

The collection is a blend of vintage with modern. So we are working with a vibrant colour palette that is perfect for the upcoming festive season. There are plenty of warm and vibrant hues like red, pink and more.

A statement that changed your life...

When nothing is sure, everything is possible.

Any style recommendations to look out for?

We’re slowly moving towards a modern twist in  Indian garments. No one wants to wear the plain ‘lehengas’ anymore; there’s always some addition like a jacket or cape. That’s what you should look out for.

What’s the hardest part of being a designer?

The working hours! No matter how much you work, it’s never enough.

Your best creation so far...

It’s yet to come. I always feel the next collection will be better than the previous one. I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied with my work.

Is there a design combination you will never try?

None. I believe experimentation is the key to success.

One such experiment that you’re proud of?

We did 3-D leather flowers on Indian fabric.

A celebrity you want to dress up?

It would be Deepika Padukone as she is very elegant.
