Chamarajnagar ZP aims to construct 1 lakh toilets by Sept 25

Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Zilla Panchayat aims to construct one lakh toilets in rural Chamarajanagar before September 25.

The district has 800 villages and 50% of the families in these villages do not have individual toilet facility. Of the 2.3 lakh families in rural Chamarajanagar, 1.6 lakh families have no toilet facility in their houses.

The authorities are planning to offer help to the people to construct toilets and thereby make the district open-defecation free.

ZP Chief Planning Officer Madesh told DH, “We aim to construct individual toilets in each house and thus
work orders to construct 25,000 toilets have already been issued.”

“As many families are economically backward, they can take the help of local people, organisations and contractors to construct the toilets. As many as 65,123 families have come forward to construct toilets on their own while others have shown interest to get the facility through Nirmithi Kendra,” he said.

The officer said that a few families are demanding the funds in advance for construction of toilets. As per the norms, an incentive of Rs 15,000 for SC/ST and Rs 12,000 for other communities will be given only after the construction of toilets is over.

Target missed last year
The authorities have failed to achieve even 50% target in the last fiscal. The officer claimed that shortage of sand and water was a hurdle in achieving the target. As the district administration allowed stocking of sand this time, we have sufficient sand for the construction work, he said. In addition, the authorities are also focusing on community toilets in villages. As many as 10,272 houses have no space to construct toilets and thus community toilets have been planned on government lands, he said.
