The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has submitted to the High Court of Karnataka that it has managed to remove encroachment on around 430 km of stormwater drains of the 800 and odd km of stormwater drains in the city.

In its status report, the civic body said that it has constructed drains on around 200 km and remodeled them. It said it has covered the drains for a length of around 50 km and fencing of the drains has also been carried out.

BBMP has identified 1,923 locations where the stormwater drains have been encroached. The high court directed the BBMP to submit details, if it has taken any action against erring officials who have failed discharge their duties.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar also directed the Palike to submit progress report of the work related to road repair, cleaning of the drains, closing of open drains and other incidental works. The PIL has been filed by Namma Bengaluru Foundation questioning the BBMP’s inaction and lack of infrastructure in the city.  The bench directed the civic body to submit its reports and adjourned the next hearing till four weeks.
