The cybercrime police on Tuesday arrested a computer aided design and drafting (CADD) engineer who tried to sell his company’s data to another company in order make a fast buck.

The arrested, Sree Shah Rao (23), is a resident of Vinayakanagar in Krishnarajapuram and an employee of The New Generation company, the police said.

Rao was into designing radius maps at his company where he worked for the past one year. To make some fast buck, Rao copied the company’s data onto his laptop and then struck a deal with another company SBT Associates.

He told them he could send the office data through email and demanded money in return.

However, Rao did not know that SBT Associates and The New Generation had a tie-up in their operations. After the deal was finalised, Rao sent the data through his personal email to SBT Associates. Surprisingly, the same data which Rao sent to SBT Associates was prepared by them for their client The New Generation, the company where Rao worked, the police said.

The CEO of SBT then sent an email to the managing director of The New Generation with the sent data as an attachment to pursue action against the employee. The MD of The New Generation filed a complaint with the cybercrime police station, and eventually the police nabbed Rao, and seized his laptop before sending him to jail.
