However, his surgery in Victoria Hospital two weeks ago, will help at least improve his quality of life.
Having visited several private hospitals in the City, the couple from West Bengal came to Victoria Hospital where the treatment was done free of cost.

According to a doctor, diagnosis showed that there was accumulation of fluid in Deeparam's brain, causing his head to inflate. He also had congenital malformation in his spinal chord, which was exposed and a large formation of cyst that had gradually grown in size.
"Normally, the spinal chord is covered by bone and muscles. However, the patient's bone lay exposed, which would have become fatal in future," he said.

After a week spent on diagnosing the problem, a team of neurosurgeons performed a three hour operated in two stages on the boy. One of the neurosurgeons said that despite the surgery, it was unlikely that Deeparam could walk properly. However, he has been given foot splints. "Although, the chances of the patient walking again is slim, the surgery has ensured a better quality of life and increased life span, as the fluid in the brain would have hampered his mental development and if the cyst had burst later, it would have lead to lot of complications," he said.

Dr B G Tilak, medical superintendent of the hospital, said that the bill of Rs 15,000 had been waived off.
