Run away with the trends

Last Updated 18 July 2017, 18:35 IST
Before we start shopping for winter, let’s take a look at what designers and couturiers across the globe have construed for us fashionistas this season. Although these collections released way back in March, their retail counterparts will trickle down to us only over the next couple of months. So it’s smart to know what to watch out for!

The colour red
It is official: Red is the colour of Fall 2017, along with the presence of turquoise, a combination with ink blue or black and also chocolate brown. These shades look best in evening wear.

The plaid effect
When you hear plaid, you typically think of 90s grunge. But this season is all about the bright plaid from the 70s. The versatile print was crafted into classic coats, statement pants and even premiered as a formal gown at several international shows.

Victorian collars
This fall, you’ll be neck deep in Victorian-inspired collars. It’s the turtleneck’s fancy older sister or great aunt even.

Man shoulders
You’re not borrowing from the boys this season, but from the men. Grandpas, to be exact. Oversized menswear blazers were spotted at many designer shows, resolving the once never-ending debate on whether shoulder pads should return or not.

Sofa florals
Designers looked to their grandmothers’ living room this season, applying vintage floral prints to everything from casual tops to princess gowns.

Mid-length skirts
Major designers like Christian Dior, Loewe, and Victoria Beckham are pirouetting towards ballet beautiful styles this Fall. The style showcased a flattering skirt hemmed at the calf with full, flouncy movements.

Wide belts
Wide waist belts are making a comeback this season and in all the right proportions.

Velvet gowns
Designers are still loving velvet, but this season they’re cutting designs from the rich fabric for jewel-tone formal wear. Choose from colours like ruby red, emerald green or sapphire blue for your velvet gown.

Padded jackets
Keep warm and look swollen! You heard me right, many designers this year are adding more puff to padded jackets.

Scarf prints
Florals, bandana prints and lots of paisley. This Liberace-meets-kitsch trend is not a favourite with the Indian demographic but is making quite a stir on the international ramp.

Plastic pretty
If there is a way to look chic in plastic, this is the season to do it. Everything from see-through plastic shoes to oversized plastic raincoats in funky colours are in vogue.

All denim or double denims
At the top of the trends list are full denim ensembles. Go ahead and wear a denim jacket with jeans, but think before you contrast the blues. It’s only a trend if the denims are the same blue.
