As many as 42 delegates from nine states got first hand information on solid waste management in Mysuru city on Friday.

The delegates were in the city to attend a state-level workshop on Solid Waste Management organised by Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) at Kabini Hostel in the Administrative Training Institute here.

Representatives from Delhi, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu were part of the delegation. People’s representatives and corporators from various city corporations in the states visited ward 34 of the MCC to see the door-to-door waste collection process and also visited a zero waste management unit.

During the inaugural ceremony of the workshop, MCC Commissioner G Jagadeesha said that the city generates 400 tonnes of waste everyday and all necessary measures have been taken to segregate waste at source.

The commissioner said that in order to check air and noise pollution, ‘Trin Trin’, a public bicycle sharing system has been introduced. The initiative also helps in reducing traffic congestion, the commissioner said.

In order to achieve the goal of solid waste management, the MCC is following a ‘Four R Principle’ — Refuse, Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. While Refuse refers to refusing to collect unsegregated waste at source and penalising those littering outside their premises, Reduce refers to reducing waste at source by adopting new technologies and following the best practices.

According to MCC authorities, there are certain challenges in solid waste management which are posing as deterrents for the city to achieve 100% segregation at source.

They stated that in order to ensure easy recovery of resources and to develop more awareness among citizens on segregation and value recovery, the MCC has chalked out various strategies.

Deputy Mayor Rathna Lakshman, Corporator H N Srikantaiah, Health Officer Dr Nagaraj and Deputy Commissioner (Development) B K Suresh Babu were present.
