The Supreme Court on Thursday sought to know the status of an investigation into the alleged conspiracy angle in the making of the bomb that killed former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The court raised its query to the central government on a contention by life-term convict A G Perarivalan that the conspiracy behind the making and supplying of the bomb that killed Rajiv on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu was not investigated properly.
The Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA), headed by the CBI, is investigating the possible conspiracy angle in the case.
“We want the Solicitor General or an Additional Solicitor General to tell us about the status of investigation on this point,” a bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha asked advocate P K Dey, who represented the MDMA.
Advocate Gopal Shankarnarayanan, appearing for Perarivalan, told the bench that several issues, including the conspiracy behind the making of the bomb that killed Rajiv, were not investigated.
The death sentence of Perarivalan, who was charged with supplying batteries for the belt-bomb worn by suicide bomber Dhanu that killed Rajiv Gandhi, was earlier commuted to life term by the apex court. In a petition, Perarivalan contended that neither the CBI’s special investigation team nor the MDMA had proceeded with the probe in a proper manner to bring the accused to book, as several top people were involved in it.
