As fancy and exotic as Feng Shui may sound, this ancient practice creates a sense of harmony in one’s home and invariably reflects positive energy among home owners. Just as yin and yang need to be in sync for harmony, even the colours in your home need to balance the energies that exist.

The practice of Feng Shui might be too vast for a beginner to incorporate, but we have broken down the anatomy with the use of colours, and highlighted reasons for choosing a colour, be it millennial pink or spring green. Apart from sofas and walls, adding a bit of colour with murals, plants, rugs, bed linen and tiles can also give your home a sense of peace.

Spring bloom

Green is an essential spring ingredient. The calming vibe of green makes it vital for our mental well-being. If health of your family features on your list of priorities, then green is the ideal colour for you. Why wait for a beautiful spring day, when you can enjoy one at home everyday?

Paint walls of your home green or put up banana leaf murals to the east of your home or on the bedroom walls. If a regal décor is more your style, think luxurious emerald velvet sofas against graphic black and white tiles and gold-embellished mirrors. If you are literally looking for a breath of fresh air, add some green embroidered foliage on cushions and ferns on your tabletops.

Romantic monsoons

The beauty of blue is undeniable, be it an exquisite peacock blue or turquoise. If peace is what you’re seeking without having to go on an expensive vacation to the Bahamas, paint your walls blue. Whether in a nautical or boho-chic theme, you can’t go wrong with blue. Go in for blue Moroccan curtains, midnight-blue sofas in velvet against mosaic-tiled floors or nautical-striped rugs to give your home a beach feel. If a soothing night of shut-eye and serenity top your agenda, then splash a bit of blue in the north-east and south-east parts of your home.

Long Island autumns

Red is a tricky colour, as it can get your temper soaring. Use red astutely, by sticking to rouge-coloured accessories and accent walls in kitchen and dining areas. Use soft yellow lights and rattan chairs in your dining hall to balance the boldness of the hue, and create an intimate setting.

You can sober down the effect of the colour further, with red chairs, red cushions on white armchairs or just red crockery. If you’re looking for a good accessory to complement the red, think copper-gold lights and accessories to bring out the glam.

Tuscany summers

Do you want a regular dose of happiness in your cosy abode? A monochromatic colour scheme in several shades of yellow and camel is what’s trending this season. Rustic furniture, butter-cream walls or a yolk-yellow wingback chair can do the trick. If you want to have a quaint kitchen that looks like a mini brasserie, give chevron wallpapers and yellow tiles go!

If books are your poison, then have your treasures on display on a lemon-yellow bookshelf to hide a bare wall. Add shades of yellow in the west to spark creativity. After all, how can you resist the happiest colour in the rainbow?

It’s time to let go of your inhibitions and try to colour your home in hues other than white and beige. Don’t be intimidated by Feng Shui, and start experimenting with colours in your décor and walls to perk up your space.
