'Govt must fill vacancies in HIMS soon'

Last Updated 26 August 2017, 18:24 IST

MLA H D Revanna has said that vacant posts in the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences should be filled soon.

Addressing reporters here on Wednesday, Revanna said that due to vacancies of medical staff, patients had been suffering from chikungunya, dengue and other vector-borne diseases and were not getting proper treatment. “Patients are forced to go to other places in search of doctors. In some places the nursing staff have to treat the patients in the absence of doctors,” he said.

Revanna said that in Paduvalahippe, the native village of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, there is no doctor. “A few patients, who were administered injections in the village, have suffered side effects. Several letters written to the Health department have not yielded any result. As many as 20 nurses, serving in Holenarasipur, have been transferred recently,” he said.

The MLA explained that of the 321 doctors sanctioned for the district, 76 posts are lying vacant. Similarly, 102 posts of nursing staff of the total 310, are vacant. From the 168 posts of junior pharmacists, around 107 are yet to be filled. In some hospitals there are neither paediatricians nor ophthalmologists, he explained.

“The government’s negligence in filling the vacant posts has benefitted private hospitals who are fleecing patients. Dialysis in government hospitals has been outsourced and Rs 1,500 is charged per person. The authorities concerned are not available over phone. The minister should appoint doctors in the hospital on priority for the benefit of people,” he said.

With regard to the water problem, Revanna said that while several parts of the city are getting drinking water once in 15 days, water from Hemavathi reservoir is being let out to Tamil Nadu and the outflow is increasing every day, he alleged.
