4 new STPs to reduce Bengaluru's waste water output

The BWSSB is constructing four new sewage treatment plants (STPs) at Koramangala and Challaghatta valley, Vrishabhavathi valley, Doddabela and Hebbal.

With a combined capacity of 400 million litres per day (MLD), these plants will treat the waste water coming from several areas, including Koramangala, areas near Mysuru Road and Hebbal.

While the STPs at Koramangala, Challaghatta and Vrishabhavathi valley will have a capacity of 150 MLD each, the one at Hebbal will have a capacity of 100 MLD. The STP at Doddabela has the least capacity of 40 MLD.

The work to lay the foundation for these plants is expected to begin in the first week of September. “The work orders have been issued on July 31,” said Sathish N, additional chief engineer, BWSSB.

These STPs have been built at a cost of Rs 1,202 crore.

The funds are coming from the Mega City Revolving Fund of the Central government, state government and also BWSSB.

Reduced waste water

Of the 1,800 MLD water that is being supplied to the city every day, 1,443 MLD comes out as waste water. With the help of the existing STPs, 721 MLD of waste water is being reused after treatment.

With the help of the four additional STPs, the amount of waste water will be further reduced. “This will benefit thousands of people living near Koramangala, Mysuru Road and Hebbal,” said a senior BWSSB spokesperson.
