VTU offers exit scheme for students with backlog

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has mooted an ‘Exit Scheme’ for 2010 syllabus students with backlogs, to help them get their degrees.

The decision was taken on Tuesday during the Executive Committee meeting chaired by vice chancellor Karisiddappa and attended by Registrar (Evaluation) Satish Annigeri and by executive committee members.

VTU Registrar H N Jagannath Reddy told Deccan Herald the move would help around 19,500 students. According to earlier rules, students who have not cleared the first and second semester subjects were denied admission to 5th semester.

Similarly those who have not cleared the 3rd and 4th semester subjects were denied admission to 7th semester.

Higher semesters

According to the new scheme, the students would be allowed to attend all higher semesters from 5th to 8th semester but clearing the gate subjects would remain the criteria to write the higher semesters. In other words, for students to write the 5th semester exam, it would be mandatory to clear all the subjects of the first two semesters.

The university would conduct separate exams for these students in higher semesters. However, the eight-year rule that mandates completion of the course in eight years would remain, he informed.

The Executive Committee had taken another decision of reviewing the marks ratio of internal and theory exams. The existing internal and theory (20:80 marks ratio) has been revised to (40:60), the registrar informed.
