The organisation was selected for this award for adopting innovative practices of ground water augmentation through rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge. The award was presented on the occasion of World Water Day, on March 22.

The BAIF-Institute for Rural Development - Karnataka (BIRD-K), a voluntary rural development organisation has been involved in the implementation of various rural development programmes in the state since 1980. The activities of the organisation are spread across 22 districts of the state. It has been serving the rural community in more than 3,000 villages with a range of agriculture and rural development activities.   
The programmes under implementation include cattle development, tree based farming system, watershed development, sericulture, sustainable agriculture, rainwater harvesting for drinking water, conservation of medicinal plants, community health, people’s organisations, training and research activities.
