Legislator alleges fishy deal, takes officials to task

Legislator V Muniyappa took these officials to task for giving the contract for just Rs 5,000.

He was holding a taluk-level meeting of the officials on the taluk panchayat action plans for 2009-10 and on other pending projects.

There were complaints with regard to awarding fishing contract at Jangamakote and Ganjigunte tanks, he said. Taluk Panchayat former president Moula set right the irregularities in the Ganjigunte case. However, the legislator said, he could not investigate into the Jangamakote case due to elections. Taking advantage of the situation the officials have taken Rs 20 lakh in cash from the contractors, he alleged. He warned Nagendra Babu of the Fisheries Department that the officials would be answerable for their act in the near future.

He discussed with the officials of different departments on various projects. Expressing his displeasure over the inefficiency of the officials and the contractors in implementing Suvarna Grama Yojane. The project should have been completed by now, he said directing the officials to serve notice on the contractors to complete the works within a month. He asked the officials to include these contractors in the black list if they failed to meet the deadline.

He instructed them to undertake works in the gram panchayats’ limits under National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. He told them to take up works on clearing silts in drainages in all the villages.

He said, in urban areas the drinking water is supplied once in two or three days. Hence the public store water in tanks which turn breeding place for mosquitoes that lead to outbreak of chikungunya, he said. Medical Officer Vijay said already three chikungunya patients have been admitted.

Taluk Panchayat President Saraswatamma Tammanna, Vice-President Hemavatamma, former president Moula, Zilla Panchayat member N Muniyappa, Chief Executive Officer Srinivas and Public Works Department Executive Officer Srinivas and Assistant Executive Engineer Malleshappa were present on the occasion.
