The Madras High Court on Thursday directed the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly to not take any action against 21 DMK MLAs till further orders.

When the petitions came up for hearing, Justice K Ravichandrabaabu posted the matter to October 27 after Advocate General Vijay Narayan sought time to file a counter.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared on behalf of the DMK legislators.

Banned packets

The leader of the Opposition and DMK working president M K Stalin, along with 20 party MLAs, are facing action for displaying banned gutkha packets during the House proceedings in July 2017.

No measures

During a debate in the Assembly, in connection with the illegal sale of tobacco and the steps taken by the government to prevent it, Stalin displayed gutkha packets and accused the government of not taking measures to prevent its sale.

Speaker P Dhanapal termed it a breach of privilege and referred the matter to the privileges committee, which sought a reply from the DMK legislators.
