The Northeast division police shot at a 21-year-old kidnapper who attacked two policemen in a bid to escape on Friday morning.

The police had earlier rescued a one-year-old boy who was kidnapped by Noor Mohammed and two of his associates from Shabarinagar slum in Kothanur on October 5. The trio had sold the infant to a woman for Rs 15,000, the police said.

The police formed a special team and arrested the trio soon after the boy was rescued from a woman identified as Shahnaz Khanum (36), a resident of Bharathinagar. The police also arrested two others Isaq Khan (18) and Abdul Waheed (18).

According to the police, Khanum was married for the second time, but her husband had deserted her. Khanum wanted a baby boy to impress upon her husband that she had delivered a son. Khanum then approached Noor Mohammed, who was her eldest daughter’s boyfriend and told him to look out for a baby boy. Khanum also promised to pay Rs 15,000 following which Mohammed, along with his associates, found a boy playing in front of a house in the slum in Shabarinagar on October 5. The child was the only son of Doddabhimaiah and Maheshwari, construction labourers from Raichur living in the city for the past two years. The trio kidnapped the child on a motorcycle and sped away.

A CCTV camera captured the act. The police identified Isaq and Waheed from the footage which led them to Khanum. The police then rescued the child and arrested her and based on her information, began to look for Mohammed.

On Friday morning, the police came to know about his whereabouts and began to chase him. Mohammed, after a hot chase, tried to escape by assaulting sub-inspector Shivappa Nayak and constable Abdul Hameed.

The police shot at Mohammed’s left leg in self defence. He and the two policemen were taken to hospital. The four suspects were booked for kidnapping and other charges, produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
