'Democracy can survive only with difference of opinions'

Democracy can survive only with difference of opinions – it can’t survive with single opinion, opined senior writer Vaidehi.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of the annual Prajavani Deepavali contest at SDM College on Saturday, Vaidehi stressed the need for discussion and healthy argument in democracy. Of late, discussions are leading towards unhealthy arguments.

She said language is losing its flavour and misunderstanding is on the rise. Citing an example, she said that most of the serials in the present times are using modern language. She said language, culture and emotions are taking a backstage and little concern is expressed towards relations and nature.

Language and tension

Questioning the need for language that gives rise to tension in society, Vaidehi said language should calm the ‘fire’ down and not ignite the ‘fire’.

She was all praise for the cover page of Deepavali special edition which depicts the light in the heart of a woman. She also praised the daily for maintaining its stand over decades and withstanding the competition in the market.

Incidentally, Vaidehi too was a winner of Prajavani special edition contest decades ago.

Vaidehi’s husband Srinivas Murthy and Prajavani associate editor M Nagaraj were present.
