Shocking equality: All patients have same BP, pulse rate at this UP hospital!

Equality in social and economic status may be hard to achieve but this was on display at this Uttar Pradesh government hospital where the Blood Pressure and pulse rate recording of all patients was identical during a surprise inspection.

In a shocking manifestation of the pathetic state of health services in the state, a surprise inspection of the community health centres (CHC) near the state capital on Tuesday night found the doctors missing and health staff asleep.

At the Gosainganj CHC , the paramedical staff on duty were in such a hurry to go to bed that they did not bother to check the Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate of the women patients, which was part of routine daily examination.

They recorded the same BP and pulse rate against all the women patients.

''It is simply not possible…all these women had undergone surgeries of different nature….their BP and pulse rate cannot be same,'' remarked a doctor, who was part of the inspection team.

According to sources, it was also found that at some CHCs newborn babies were being fed water instead of milk.

Not a first

Taking a serious view of the matter, the health directorate has sought an explanation from the doctors and the paramedical staff of the hospital. ''Stern action will be taken against the erring employees,'' said a senior health official here.

Earlier too, ward boys and sweepers were found stitching wounds and bandaging patients at government hospitals in several UP districts.
