The BBMP has begun developing 423 main and sub-arterial roads under the Nagarothana scheme for 2016-17 and 2017-18.

BBMP's Chief Engineer for road infrastructure S Somashekar said a 530 kilometre stretch has been developed in packages. "There are 56 packages and work has been going on in all of them," he said.

The city is covered by a stretch of 14,000 kilometre roads, out of which 1500 kilometre are main roads and 13,500 km are ward level thoroughfares.

Somashekar said heavy rains from August 14 hampered the road development work. "We have taken up 106roads in the Rajarajeshwari Nagar zone, where alone there are 24 projects," he revealed.

"Right now, 52 projects are underway. Seven roads have been developed in the East zone at a cost of Rs 9.50 crore," he added.

Apart from asphalting, road widening, traffic related works and special works have also been undertaken as a part of the project at a cost of Rs 596 crore.

The Chief Engineer said tender process has been started to widen Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Varthur Main Road, Tannery Road, Bellary Road and Jayamahal Road. Rs 420 crore is being spent for the work.

"Work related to traffic and vehicle movement is being carried out by the traffic engineering wing. We are including Bus Bay, developing junctions and signboards for better traffic movement. We have taken up 63 of these projects for Rs 70 crore and have already completed seven of them," Somashekar said.
