BBMP to continue drive against English boards

Last Updated 15 November 2017, 20:29 IST

The  Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will continue its drive to remove all English boards in front of shops in the city.

The civic agency claims it is just implementing the orders issued by the Kannada  Development Authority (KDA). The KDA had directed the BBMP to ensure that at least 60% of the space on a board should be written in Kannada. BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad told DH: "During meetings conducted by the KDA, we were directed to launch a drive to remove boards."

Directive to Mantri Mall

On November 10, the BBMP commissioner wrote to Mantri Mall for violating the rule of using Kannada on commercial boards. The letter said: "During a recent inspection, we found there were no Kannada boards on the Mantri Mall premises, both indoor and outdoor, while other languages are given prominence. As per the government rule, Kannada should be used compulsorily in commercial boards. It is directed that the boards contain 60% of Kannada and 40% of English. Hence, it is directed that within three days, Mantri Mall should submit  a report with photos of the changed board by following the rule."
