Fog disrupts 40 flight operations at KIA

Last Updated 23 November 2017, 08:47 IST

As many as 40 flight operations were delayed due to early morning fog at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here on Wednesday. With temperatures dipping, these disruptions are expected to get worse with the onset of winter.

Thirty-seven flights departing to various domestic destinations were delayed for about one hour. The arrival of three IndiGo flights were also delayed due to the foggy conditions that reduced visibility to near zero.

However, no flights were diverted to other airports. The flight disruptions at KIA had a cascading effect on the other flights.

Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) officials said the inconvenience caused to passengers was minimal as the respective airlines had alerted them in advance.

Wednesday's flight delays due to fog are the third this season. The disruptions are expected to continue till the second runway is operationalised at the airport. This runway has a CAT III B instrument landing system that allows flights to land or take off even with 50
metre visibility. The existing runway has only ILS CAT 1 system. The visibility range is between 550 m and 800 m.
